When pressing on a tight spot, you will experience a sensation that is unique to you. Tenderness, pressure, twitching, warmth, softening, or a “hurts so good feeling” are some of the many ways people describe what they feel with muscle release. Find a technique that gives you a moderate level of pressure where you can remain relaxed and take deep breaths. Any intensity or pain that makes you want to tense up or hold your breath is too much.
Common sensations
- Pressure - you are applying pressure with the tip of the Mark into a tight muscle; at first, the muscle meets it with resistance until it begins to soften
- Warmth - pressure temporarily stops blood flow into an area of the muscle, allowing for it to flow through better once you remove the pressure
- Twitching - a local twitch response may indicate that you're applying pressure to a trigger point that is trying to release
- Referral sensations - tightness or discomfort felt in a location (lower back, front of hip, glute region, outer hip, upper thigh) away from the area you are applying pressure
- Muscle softening - reduction in the initial pressure and resistance felt in the tight muscle as you apply consistent pressure
Other sensations
The following sensations are something to be aware of as you apply pressure to your muscles. If you experience any of these, don't panic. Simply come off the tool and try moving it to a slightly different spot. Check that you are using the Mark ABOVE the hip crease and consider using a technique for less pressure.
- Tingling or numbness - you may be pressing too close to a nerve
- Burning or shooting sensation - you may be pressing too close to a nerve
- Throbbing - you may be pressing too close to a blood vessel
By following the instructions, you'll stay away from the areas of the body where these nerves and blood vessels are located.
